A new project based on the Icehearts model is about to commence in the Spanish cities of Seville and Madrid. Launched in partnership with the La Liga-supported community initiative Fútbol Más, the project targets children and young people aged 6 to 16. Its main goal is to promote emotional well-being among vulnerable young people through a combination of football participation and focused mentorship.

Participants will be selected from ten schools located in marginalised neighbourhoods in Madrid and Seville. Most of the participants are expected to be first or second-generation immigrants. Working closely with other stakeholders such as social services, families, and schools, trained mentors will provide ongoing individual and group support. Continuous monitoring will allow the needs of each participant to be addressed, and the approach to be adapted if necessary.

The pilot will also include weekly "socio-sport” sessions that combine sporting elements with social and emotional learning, as well as workshops, interactive sessions, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. Monthly community activities will encourage the participation of families, and the wider community. A fundamental element of the Fútbol Más methodology is its "Green Card," and “Blue Card” positive reinforcement tools, which closely align with the Icehearts model.

The preparation phase began in May and will run until September 2024. Following this, a recruitment process for both participants and mentors will begin. Ultimately, the project is expected to provide valuable insight into the effectiveness of the Icehearts model in a Spanish context. Associated partners will be trained as "Next Adopters" based on lessons learned from the project.
